PearFinding Notes

Triggering Search

Finding notes in Pear Note requires first triggering the search display. This can be done in 3 ways:

  • Clicking the Search button
  • Using the keyboard shortcut - ⌘⇧F
  • Using the "Search for Notes" menu item under the Edit menu

Finding a Note

When the search window is first displayed, it lists all your Pear Notes in modification date order (newest first). Note that this is doing a search, and may take a couple of seconds to fully populate the list. At this point, you can do one of two things:

  • Select a note from the list to be opened. This can be done with either the mouse pointer or the up/down arrows.
  • Start typing to search for a note. This will search the contents and names of all the Pear Note documents on your computer. Note that this search will continually update as you type.

Important Keys

There are a few keys that have special meaning in this window:

  • Return - opens the currently highlighted note
  • Esc - closes the search window
  • Up/Down arrows - select the previous/next note in the list

Preview

The search window will display a preview of the currently selected note to aid in choosing the appropriate note. Note that this is a simple preview, and some things (such as text color) may not be displayed.

Powered by Spotlight

Pear Note search is powered by Spotlight. This means it is very powerful, can search your entire hard drive extremely quickly, and gets live updates of new documents being created. However, this also means that notes stored on volumes that are not indexed by Spotlight will not be found. This is rarely a problem for users, but is something to keep in mind.
